My art is based on the emotional connections that we have with one another. The idea for this work has come out of some especially trying times in my life where I have felt isolated and alone. It is through these experiences that I have come to learn that everyone at some point in their lives will feel these same emotions.
I have chosen sculpture as my medium to portray these connections as sculpture is a very tactile medium that becomes part of the viewers’ physical space. I have chosen to create a series of quick study figures that are based on different emotions through the use of body language. I chose not to create pieces that are highly detailed and finished, so as to not detract from the emotional aspect of the pieces.
These figures are set as individual pieces, set on an independent bases that are a representation of comfort zones that we feel when we are in the presence of other people. Each of these emotional representations can be viewed independently or in different groupings that will in effect change the original meaning of each sculpture, through the new interactions. Emotional interpretations are very personal and independent to each individual, based on their own life experiences.
My goal is for the audience to recognize the meanings that tend to be independent and personal to everyone. Then start to recognize within themselves the connections that they have to people around them.
